Surrounded by family and friends outside Hennepin County Courthouse, Katie Wright said she called her son and the passenger in the car answered on FaceTime, "she was crying and screaming and she said that they shot him, then she pointed the phone towards the driver's seat and my son was laying there unresponsive."
"That was the last time that I seen my son, that was the last time I have heard from my son and I have had no explanation since then," she added.
Among those also present were lawyer Ben Crump, who is representing the Wright family and was already representing the family of George Floyd, as well as Floyd's brother, Philonise Floyd.
"Minneapolis you all can't sweep this under the rug anymore, we are here and we will fight for justice for this family, just like we are fighting for our brother," declared Philonise Floyd.
Wright, 20, was killed on Sunday after being pulled over for a traffic violation and there was a struggle while he was trying to get back into his car. Wright was shot by an officer and was later pronounced dead after he crashed his car several streets away after driving away from the scene of the shooting.
A police statement released on Monday said the incident was an accident and the officer intended to use a taser not a gun on Wright. Tensions in nearby Minneapolis are high as the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer accused of killing Floyd continues.
