The Normandy Format talks kicked off in the Elysee Presidential Palace in Paris, Friday.
The talks are being held between Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The meeting seeks to re-inforce the principles of the Minsk Agreements and the ceasefire in the Ukrainian conflict. Putin has emphasised that for peace to last in Ukraine, direct dialogue between the self-proclaimed republics in Donbass and the Ukrainian government must be forthcoming.
The conflict in Syria is also likely to be discussed, after the Kremlin announced it conducted its first airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, successfully hitting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) targets.
