Description

Former Belarusian culture minister and current Belarusian opposition coordinating council participant Pavel Latushko called on Russia and European Union to mediate the negotiations between authorities and protesters during a press conference of the opposition coordinating council on Tuesday.

“It is in our interest to have good relationships both with Russia and the EU. But Russia and the European Union are interested in having good relations with the Belarusian nation, which means that the EU and Russia have to meet society's expectations. Society, not the government who already lost the trust of this society,” he said.

Olga Kovalkova, representative of Belarusian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya mentioned that the current Belarusian government “wages war instead of dialogue”.

“The coordinating council acts on the basis of Belarus’s fundamental constitutional principle, it doesn't aim to seize the government power via non-constitution ways, it also doesn’t call for organising and preparation of actions to violate public order”, she added.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed August 9 presidential election that saw Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term. As the Internal Affairs Ministry reported, two protesters were killed in clashes with police.
