US President Joe Biden criticised his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin after the latter compared the jailed Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny to the rioters who had carried out the Capitol insurrection on January 6. The US President was talking in a press briefing in Geneva on Wednesday after his bilateral summit with Putin.
"I think that's a ridiculous comparison. It's one thing for literally criminals to break through cordon, go into the Capitol, kill a police officer and be held unaccountable," said Biden after Putin likened charges brought against Russian dissidents and Navalny to those filed against Capitol rioters.
Two rioters had used a type of pepper spray on Officer Brian Sicknick while storming the Capitol. The chief medical examiner for Washington DC however ruled the officer had died from two strokes and natural causes, meaning the men were unlikely to be charged with homicide.
