Description

Sheikh Naim Qassem was elected Hezbollah's secretary general on Tuesday, succeeding the late Hassan Nasrallah who was killed in an Israeli airstrike last month.

Qassem is seen in archive footage shot in Beirut in 2017 and 2018.

"In accordance with the adopted procedure for electing the Secretary-General, Hezbollah's Shura Council agreed to elect His Eminence Sheikh Naim Qassem as the Secretary-General of Hezbollah," the group announced.

Naim Qassem was born in Beirut's Al-Basta Al-Tahta area in 1953. He has served as Hezbollah deputy secretary general since 1991 during the tenure of Abbas Musawi, and continuing in the role under Nasrallah.

He was one of Hezbollah's founding members and co-ordinator for its election campaigns. Nasrallah and others were killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut on September 24.

Israel has conducted a ground incursion into parts of southern Lebanon, as well as an ongoing campaign of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets since September. Lebanon's Ministry of Health stated that 2,710 have been killed and over 12,500 injured at time of publication.

The current escalation between Israel and Hezbollah began last month with explosions of wireless communications devices used by Hezbollah, which killed dozens and injured thousands. The sides have exchanged cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza war.
