Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf claimed that BRICS played 'a key role' in development and transformation of the global economy, speaking on the sidelines of the group’s 10th Parliamentary Forum in St Petersburg on Friday.

"BRICS was formed by emerging economies and now they have brought about great development and transformation. The 21st century brought about a great transformation to Asia. And today, the Asian continent, both in terms of GDP production and in terms of consumption, actually constitute more than 60 per cent of the global economy. BRICS has been able to play a key role in this regard," he stated.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of South Africa’s National Council of Provinces Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane said the forum became a key platform to discuss the development of the BRICS economies.

"Coming together in this way where we are being tied together on issues of collaboration that are common amongst us to make sure that we change both the socio-economic landscape of our various countries, working with the World Trade Organisation of course and making sure that there are free trade and there’s ease of movement amongst our countries and how to enhance and grow our economy working together," the politician added.

Speaker of Tanzania’s National Assembly Tulia Ackson emphasised that Dodoma was interested in co-operation with Moscow and continues to develop relations with Russia.

"We continue to work together as two sovereign states and we respect each other," she said, adding: "We have seen heads of states visiting this country, like some of the top leaders of the country have visited Russia. And we believe that [it] gave a chance for the two countries to discuss which areas of interest [exist] for both of them so that they can co-operate more than it was before."

The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum took place in St Petersburg from July 11-12, uniting delegations from 17 countries. According to organisers, parliamentarians discussed ways to improve the efficiency of international relations, counter fragmentation of multilateral trade, address the consequences of global crises, and enhance humanitarian and cultural co-operation.
