Artillery crews of Russian Sever Group of Forces were seen engaging targets using Msta-S self-propelled howitzers and Giatsint-S self-propelled guns in the border areas of the Kursk region.
Footage released by the Russian Defence Ministry on Saturday shows servicemen loading an artillery gun with ammunition, aiming and firing at specified coordinates.
The ministry claimed that artillery crews worked in conjunction with a UAV aerial reconnaissance unit, while the range of engagement was several dozens of kilometres.
"Firing can be carried out both from closed firing positions and direct fire without preliminary preparation. Due to the self-propelled character of the howitzers, the artillerymen immediately change firing positions and remain undetected by enemy UAVs after destroying the enemy," the defence ministry said.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valeriy Gerasimov stated that 'on August 6, AFU units went on the offensive to seize part of the territory in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region', while the actions of Russian troops 'stopped the enemy's advance deep into the territory'.
At the same time, the Russian Defence Ministry continues to report that attempts to break through the AFU mobile groups in the Kursk region have been suppressed.
According to the Kursk region's acting government, 12 people were killed, 121 wounded, including 10 children, in the attack. A counter-terrorist operation regime was introduced in the Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions on August 9.
More than 120,000 people have been evacuated from the border districts of the Kursk region. Over 10,000 Kursk residents have been placed in temporary shelters on the territory of 24 regions. There is no information at the momentabout the fate of 2,000 residents from 28 settlements controlled by the AFU.
Advisor to the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office Mykhailo Podolyak announced on August 8 that AFU troops had 'advanced deep' into Russian territory, while President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Sunday, August 11, that Ukrainian troops were fighting inside Russia.
Meanwhile, European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano said that "EU continues to fully support Ukraine’s legitimate right to defend itself against Russian aggression and its efforts to restore sovereignty and territorial integrity."
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that Kiev’s use of equipment provided by Washington to target Russian military sites was 'not in violation of our policy'.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
