Description

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said that the Kremlin had 'no comments' on the reports of a major prisoner exchange between Moscow and Western countries, speaking with journalists in Moscow on Thursday.

He also commented on the delivery of Western F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, noting that these aircraft "will not be able to have any significant impact on the dynamics of developments at the front."

"These jets are no magic bullet, no panacea. And the armed forces of the Kiev regime will not have this universal remedy. They must realise this. There will be these jets, their number will gradually decrease, they will be shot down and destroyed," Peskov added.

Several media outlets reported on Wednesday that a major prisoner exchange between the Western countries, Belarus and Russia may take place in the near future. Among the potential prisoners for exchange are Artyom and Anna Dultsev, accused of espionage in Slovenia, FSB officer Vadim Krasikov, The Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, German citizen Rico Krieger, and former US marine Paul Whelan.

On the same day, it was reported that the first six F-16 fighter jets had arrived in Ukraine, following the US decision to hand them over at the request of Kiev and NATO countries in May 2023.

Last summer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kiev would receive F-16s. The Danish Defence Ministry specified that Copenhagen and Amsterdam would deliver about 60 aircraft to Ukraine starting from 2024.

Western countries regularly announce deliveries of heavy weapons to Ukraine, including air defence systems, long-range multiple rocket launcher systems, artillery and tanks.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry regularly claims to have destroyed significant amounts of Ukrainian and Western weapons, and says that repeated deliveries will only prolong the conflict and won't prevent Moscow from achieving its objectives in the region.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
