Muslims in Kyrgyzstan celebrated Eid al-Adha on Wednesday in Bishkek's Old Square, with footage showing the mullah presiding over the prayers, and locals and police officers taking part.
"This holiday is the most sacred for Muslims all over the world. I congratulate all my fellow Kyrgyz people on this holy day," said Omurbek Umetaliyev, chairperson of Elders of Kyrgyzstan.
Bishkek's Main Department of Internal Affairs reported that around 25,000 people attended the event.
Eid al-Adha, the 'Feast of the Sacrifice' is celebrated annually on the tenth day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar, and lasts for three days. It marks the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice one of his sons to obey his God, before God provided him with a lamb to sacrifice instead.
The holiday also marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage when Muslims from all over the world travel to Mecca.
