"We reject any alliance's claim to exclusivity; we know where such ambitions lead. Russia will do everything possible to prevent a global conflict, but at the same time we will not allow anyone to threaten us, and our strategic forces are always on alert," the president said.
Putin claimed Western countries had strived to distort the history of World War II.
"They demolish memorials to the true fighters against Nazism, put on pedestals the traitors and collaborators of the Nazis, erase the memory of the heroism and nobility of the soldiers of the liberators, of the great sacrifice they made in the name of life," the Russian leader added.
"We honour the bravery of all the soldiers of the anti-Hitler coalition, the resistance of the underground partisans, the courage of the people of China who fought for their independence against the aggression of militaristic Japan, and we will always remember, never, never forget our common struggle and inspiring traditions of alliance," he stated.
Victory Day is celebrated across Russia and around the world, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Putin was joined by the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Guinea-Bissau and Cuba, as well as the leader of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
