Russian citizens were observed voting in the presidential election in Baku, Azerbaijan and Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on Sunday.

"Many of my close friends have already voted at polling stations or voted electronically. It was extremely important for me to go to the polling station, because today we are

choosing the future of our country, the fate of our country, the future of our children. This is our civic duty and civic responsibility," said Honorary Representative of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Azerbaijan Maria Suvorovskaya.

Olympic athlete Irek Zinnurov shared that he came to vote together with his partner.

"I decided to come first in the morning with my wife and give my vote for stability in our country, so that our country prospers and our children can sleep peacefully," he said.

In turn, Russian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Ivan Volynkin confirmed that polling stations in the country opened as planned on schedule.

"All polling stations on the territory of Turkmenistan, and there are five of them, opened on time, all are working normally. At the moment, as of 10 o'clock, more than 300 people have already voted," said the ambassador.

According to the Russian Central Election Commission, as of Sunday morning, the overall turnout for the presidential election was more than 61.4 per cent.

Russia's presidential election takes place over three days on March 15-17, with early voting between February 25 and March 14.

The four candidates are Leonid Slutsky of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), the Communist Party's Nikolai Kharitonov, Vladislav Davankov of the New People Party and incumbent President Vladimir Putin, running as an independent candidate.
