Description

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Khudaferin on Sunday, shortly before the helicopter crash in which Raisi lost his life.

The Azerbaijani leader's press service reported that the heads of state attended the opening ceremony of the Khudaferin and Giz Galasi hydroelectric complexes on the Aras River.

The 63-year-old Iranian president was reported dead on Monday, alongside his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Governor of East Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati and Imam of Friday Prayers in Tabriz Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem others after their US-made Bell 212 helicopter came down in the mountains in northern Iran's East Azerbaijan province during heavy fog on Sunday. They were returning from the inauguration of a dam on the border with Azerbaijan.

The aircraft was discovered by rescuers in the early hours of Monday, while no official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Global leaders, including those from Russia, India, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and other nations, have also extended their condolences. Raisi, a conservative cleric closely associated with Supreme Leader Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
