Regular flights resumed between Vladivostok and the Chinese city of Harbin on Sunday after a three-year pause due to covid restrictions, announced Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of Primorsky region, who was aboard the first flight.

Footage shows passengers queuing for check-in, dropping off luggage, and walking around the airport which was decorated to honour the occasion.

Kozhemyako said that as a result of recent bilateral talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, cross-border cooperation between the two states has increased.

"Our trip, the first in an open flight by Aurora company, will provide an opportunity to establish relations directly with the border provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang in building trade relations and tourism," Kozhemyako said.

According to the governor, 'economic and cultural ties between China and Russia' have been interrupted due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"Opening China for tourists, for Primorsky region residents, is of great importance both for the economy and the social sphere," Kozhemyako added.

One of the passengers on the flight, Evgenii Okhlopov, travelled to his spouse's homeland for the first time in three years together with his wife and their child. According to Evgenii, the grandparents from China will be able to see their grandchild for the first time thanks to the resumption of air travel.

The Vladivostok airport's press service said that flights to Harbin will depart three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Flights between Vladivostok and Beijing will resume on March 28.

Regular flights between Vladivostok and Harbin had been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. In November 2022, flights between Khabarovsk and Harbin resumed.
