Description

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov inspected the command post of the Zapad Group of Forces in the Ukraine conflict zone on Wednesday.

Footage shows the minister presenting state awards, including the Order of Courage, to the soldiers and listening to the report from Commander of the Group of Forces Colonel General Sergei Kuzovlev.

"In general, the enemy units suffered significant losses. Regarding the capture of prisoners, there were separate units [captured], there were even fully equipped ones of 20-30 people in total," Kuzovlev said.

According to the Defence Ministry’s press service, Belousov also was presented "with the objective control footage of engagement of hostile material and manpower."

Ukraine had not commented on the claims about prisoners at time of publication.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
