UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said that the Emirates favoured a "multipolar world that fosters development for all nations", during a meeting with his counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday.

"Mr President, the Emirates advocates for a multipolar world that fosters development for all nations. We wholeheartedly support you in this direction both within the BRICS and SCO frameworks, within the OPEC Plus co-operation and in other directions," he said.

The UAE president thanked Putin for Russia's contribution in sending Emirati cosmonaut Hazza Al Mansouri into space, emphasising that this effort had "left a mark in the hearts of every Emirati".

"It will forever remain in the history of our relations that Russia contributed greatly to achieving the dream of Sheikh Zayed [bin Sultan Al Nahyan], who founded the UAE. That dream was to send an Emirati astronaut into space. Hazza Al Mansouri became the first Emirati astronaut on the ISS. He got there on a Russian spacecraft and became the second after Sultan Al Neyadi, achieving the success that Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin once achieved," he continued.

Al Nahyan also praised his professional and personal relationship with the Russian leader.

In turn, Putin said that the day before the leaders had managed to talk in an 'informal atmosphere' and discuss 'all the sensitive aspects' of bilateral co-operation.

"We drew attention to those issues that require special attention on our part, because despite the threefold growth of trade turnover over the past three years, we have seen some downward correction over the past seven months. We agreed that our colleagues will work on these issues separately," Putin said.

Al Nahyan visited Moscow to meet Putin ahead of the BRICS summit. According to reports, the leaders discussed the prospects for the development of Russia-UAE co-operation as well as topical international issues, including the situations in the Middle East and North Africa.

The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. World leaders from more than 20 countries are expected, with delegations expected from over 30 nations, for one of the major economic, political and cultural events of the decade.

Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024. The group also expanded this year, growing in both size and influence to nearly half the world’s population and a third of the global economy.
