Hundreds of supporters of Evghenia Gutul, the Governor of Gagauzia, rallied in front of the Chisinau District Court in the Moldovan capital today, during a hearing in the case on the financing of the Shor party.

Footage shows protesters holding placards and chanting - 'Victory', 'Ilan Shor, we are with you', 'Down with Maia Sandu' and 'The people united will never be defeated'.

"She [Moldovan President Maia Sandu] does not have the resources to fight poverty in our country because she is busy with us, while we are busy working to find ways for our people to live better, for our pensioners to have pension increases, for public sector workers to have salary increases. This is what differentiates us from the authorities in Chisinau and the opposition," Gutul said outside the court.

Gutul stands accused of 'channelling Russian funds to the Shor party'. The party, named Sor and presided over by Israeli-born businessman and Politician Ilan Shor, was declared unconstitutional by the Moldovan Constitutional Court in June 2023.

On March 6 2024, the acting Prosecutor General of Moldova, Ion Munteanu, referred the case against the head of the autonomous region of Gagauzia to court. Gutul is accused of receiving campaign funds from an 'organised criminal group'.

Following Monday’s hearing the judge adjourned the case until June 3.
