Description

Russian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleg Salyukov said Russia and South Africa's 'mutual understanding' dated back to the days of apartheid - and added that Moscow backed the country's 'aspirations for a sovereign political course' - during a meeting with South African National Defence Force Commander Rudzani Maphwanya in Moscow on Monday.

"The relations of friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of Russia and South Africa, dating back to the times of the struggle against apartheid, are today consistently developing in the context of a mutually beneficial partnership. We support South Africa's aspiration for a sovereign political course. These efforts are conditioned by the natural process of forming a multipolar world," Salukov emphasised.

Footage also shows the generals taking part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden.

The Russian commander-in-chief also noted that the partnership between Russia and South Africa was of a 'strategic and long-term nature, which envisages friendly, reliable and equal relations'.

The Defence Ministry's press service said the military leaders agreed to further strengthen co-operation between the armed forces in various areas.

According to the ministry, during their visit, the South African delegation will tour military training institutions of the Ground Forces, the Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as historical sites and museums in Moscow and the surrounding region.
