Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Moscow on Tuesday that relations between the countries have the character of a privileged strategic partnership.

"Our relations today represent a particularly privileged strategic partnership. We are always in contact with you. And we pay the utmost attention to the development of trade and economic ties. Their development is undoubtedly in line with the interests of both the people of India and the Russian Federation," Putin said.

In turn, Modi thanked Putin for India's support for agriculture during the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed confidence that co-operation between the countries will improve.

"The last five years have been very difficult for the whole world. We saw different conflicts, crises. First COVID-19 posed challenges for the whole world and humanity, then came different conflicts, disagreements, and humanity found itself in such a difficult position. <...> Thanks to our friendship we avoided all the difficulties that the Indian farmers might have faced and we met their needs. And that is where the special role of our friendship with you lies, and we are fully committed to protect the interests of Indian farmers through bilateral co-operation," the Indian PM noted.

Modi arrived in Moscow at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin for bilateral talks. The Indian leader is expected to attend a number of events in the Russian capital during the visit on July 8-9.

His last trip to Russia was in 2019, when the PM attended the Far Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok. He will travel to Austria at the conclusion of his visit.
