Description

Supporters of the Shor opposition party rallied against the new government and the increase in energy tariffs in Chisinau on Sunday.

Footage shows protesters marching towards the National Opera and Ballet Theatre and chanting 'Down with Maia Sandu!'

Activists can also be seen giving speeches outside the theatre with one of the protesters holding a banner in her hands reading 'Don't make us run up debts because of your bills'.

According to the website of the Shor party, protesters demanded that the government fully pay the people's winter bills.

"Everyone is accumulating utility debts, because of this trend many citizens, especially the elderly, cannot even afford the basic necessities and medicines they need," said Marina Tauber, vice-chairwoman of the Shor party.

One of the protesters stressed that the state does not take any measures to stabilise the situation.

"Why are we paying so much for gas, more expensive than everyone else [in the world]? Why should an 80 year-old woman have to freeze to death because of Maia Sandu's incompetence? They are not taking measures to help the people. People are stretched to the limit," she added.

The rally was accompanied by representatives of law enforcement agencies.

No official reports of detentions have been released at the time of publication.

On February 10, Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita announced her resignation, which also removed the entire cabinet.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu accepted the resignation and on the same day nominated Secretary of the Supreme Security Council Dorin Recean as her candidate for PM.

On Thursday, former Interior Minister Dorin Recean became the head of the new government and the cabinet was approved by a majority vote of MPs. After the vote, MPs from the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) blocked the podium in parliament and chanted 'Shame' over amendments introduced to limit the number of faction speakers during the vote.

The Action and Solidarity Party won a snap election in August 2021, forming the government led by Gavrilita.
