Residents of Caracas and Managua took part in an Immortal Regiment event to commemorate fallen soldiers in WWII on Sunday, May 5.

Footage shows a concert dedicated to the 'Great Patriotic War' in a Venezuelan square and a procession of compatriots carrying banners and photos of relatives who were veterans. Special Representative for Russian Affairs Laureano Ortega was also seen in Nicaragua for the memorial.

Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov noted that the Immortal Regiment takes place in the country for the third year. According to the diplomat, the event aims to preserve the memory of the events of the war.

"The Immortal Regiment is an event that unites millions of people who share the idea of a world without nazism and fascism, who realise the importance of preserving the memory and historical truth about the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War, so that their lessons are never forgotten. <...> Together with our compatriots and Venezuelan friends, we are marching side by side, paying tribute to the memory of the heroes and fighters against the universal evil of fascism," he said.

The Telegram channel of the Venezuelan embassy said that the procession was attended by more than 300 people, including Russian, Belarusian and Venezuelan diplomats, activists of the Venezuelan branch of the Victory Volunteers All-Russian public movement, the Association of Alumni of Russian and Soviet universities and other public organisations.

The social media of the Nicaraguan Embassy noted the action took place in the republic for the third year in a row. About 250 people took part in the procession.

The Immortal Regiment March takes place on Victory Day in many countries of the world to commemorate the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in World War II, during which participants carry portraits of soldiers who served in the Red Army and lay flowers at memorials.
