Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that 'peace is a must' as he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday.
"As your friend, I always tell you that for the bright future of our future generations, peace is a must," he said. "Therefore, we believe that war is not a solution. There can be no solution through war. Bombs, missiles and rifles cannot bring peace, so we emphasise dialogue and dialogue is necessary."
"Yesterday we also agreed to bring peace as soon as possible, and we are ready to provide any assistance in this endeavour. I have heard your position, your positive views and reflections. I can assure you that India has always been on the side of peace," he continued.
Modi added that he and Putin had 'exchanged views in an open manner' on Ukraine, while the PM said they had also discussed matters relevant to the Global South.
"During our G20 presidency, India had given the voice of the Global South to the world community. Yesterday in our conversations, I had the opportunity to present these issues related to the Global South to you," he said.
Modi also said that Russian-Indian energy co-operation ensured stability on the global market.
"In many countries around the world, people are facing problems with fuel, diesel, but thanks to our agreements with you in the energy sector, we have been able to provide our citizens with this fuel. And not only did we provide it, we were able to keep inflation under control and also ensured stability," India’s leader said.
Modi arrived in Moscow on July 8 on a two-day state visit at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to hold talks and
attend a series of events.
His last trip to Russia was in 2019, when the PM attended the Far Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok. He will travel to Austria at the conclusion of his visit.
