Russian President Vladimir Putin said that BRICS was a 'non-Western' rather than an 'anti-Western' organisation, borrowing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words, as he held a press meeting with leading BRICS media agencies in the Moscow region on Friday.

"Indian Prime Minister [Narenda Modi] said a very good [phrase]. He recently said that BRICS is not anti-Western; it's just non-Western. This is very important. It makes a lot of sense. So, BRICS is not opposing anybody. It is simply an association of states that work together on the basis of common values and a common vision of development," Putin explained.

The Russian leader also said that BRICS would warmly welcome any nation wishing to become a member.

"30 countries have expressed their desire to co-operate with BRICS to a greater or lesser extent, to join the organisation in one way or another. This is a visible effect of accession - right after this wave, the next one is growing," he added. "We will absolutely not push anyone away. The doors are definitely open."

The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled for October 22-24. Leaders from more than 24 countries are expected to attend, with Russia's closest neighbours and partners in the Eurasian Economic Union and Commonwealth of Independent States also invited. Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024.
