Description

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov claimed that 'poorly targeted' Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon, as well as the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, had led to a 'substantial destabilisation' of the situation in the Middle East while speaking to reporters in Moscow on Monday.

"The Russian side condemns such actions. We believe that they have led to a substantial destabilisation of the situation in the region," he said. "The poorly targeted bombardments of residential areas in Lebanon are causing an enormous loss of human life and will inevitably result in a humanitarian disaster similar to the one we are witnessing in Gaza."

According to Peskov, the risks of a major war in the region are 'extremely high' following the death of Nasrallah.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on all parties to 'stop the bloodshed' in the Middle East and urged leaders to avoid 'settling political scores'.

On Friday, an Israeli airstrike hit Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs, killing the militant group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah and others.

The IDF's latest campaign of airstrikes began last Monday, with more than 1,030 killed and 6,300 injured in total, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

Tensions escalated in mid-September after a series of explosions of wireless communications devices used by Hezbollah left dozens dead and thousands injured.

Hezbollah has also launched hundreds of rockets into northern Israel. Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging cross-border fire since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza in October 2023.
