India's National Security Adviser Ajit Kumar Doval told Vladimir Putin that Narendra Modi had asked him to 'personally brief' the Russian president on some of the details of his private talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during their meeting in St Petersburg on Thursday.

"He [Narendra Modi] was keen to brief you about his visit to Ukraine and his meeting with President Zelensky. And he wanted me to come especially and personally and brief you about the talks. The talk was in a very close format, it was only the two leaders," he said. "I happened to be with the prime minister."

For his part, Putin proposed a meeting with the Indian PM on October 22 in Kazan. The Russian leader also noted that the "special and privileged strategic partnership" between their countries was "gaining momentum, gaining strength".

"We are also happy about India’s successes in building, strengthening its statehood and developing its economy under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi," the Russian president added.

Modi flew to Kiev for talks with Zelensky last month, after also holding discussions with Putin. During the public part of the meeting with Zelensky, the Indian Prime Minister urged Russia and Ukraine to jointly find a way out of the crisis.

Doval and Putin were speaking during the meeting of high-ranking security officials of BRICS and BRICS+ countries, in St Petersburg on September 10-12.
