Russia’s Federation Council Chair Valentina Matviyenko said that 'friendly' ties with Pakistan are 'not subject to the immediate global political conjuncture', during an inter-parliamentary meeting with the country's Senate President Yousuf Raza Gilani in Islamabad on Monday.

"We also consider the relations between our countries to be friendly, which is particularly valuable today. As our leaders in Russia and Pakistan have emphasised, they are not subject to the immediate global political conjuncture," she said.

Matviyenko also praised the 'highest level' of Pakistan’s chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of Government Council, saying that Russia has a lot to do to 'surpass the bar that Pakistan set'.

In turn, Gilani stressed that Islamabad aims to 'further enhance the relationship with Russia'.

"We have a lot of co-operation between Russia and Pakistan in energy, in agriculture, in power sector, in power plants, in steel mills and connectivities, and in culture and education," he added.

Following the meeting, Matviyenko and Gilani signed a memorandum of understanding between Russia’s Federation Council and the Senate of Pakistan.
