Description

The parliament of the Donetsk People's Republic unanimously adopted a new constitution, on Friday.

The acting head of the DPR Denis Pushylin spoke to parliamentarians about the importance of this step.

"This stage marks the return of Donbass to the bosom of the Russian cultural and historical tradition, the fulfilment of our hopes and the achievement of the goal we have been pursuing for eight long years," Pushylin claimed.

According to the acting head of the DPR, the republic's legal framework has been deliberately approximated to the Russian one.

"We were striving for home, back to Russia, so we formed our legislative framework in such a way that it was as close as possible to the Russian legislative field. This is why this process, I am sure, will not take that long, and we will probably see the first changes that will affect absolutely everyone on January 1," Pushylin shared.

The unanimous adoption of the new constitution was also reported by the authorities of the Lugansk People's Republic, on Friday.

The documents adopted by the LPR and DPR each contain 83 clauses stipulating the rights of the republic's residents. One of the main points is the status of the republics as regions of the Russian Federation rather than independent states. The heads of the regions remain the highest officials, who are elected by parliaments for a five-year term. Russian is listed as the official language.

At the time of publication, the Ukrainian authorities had not commented on news of the adoption of new constitutions for the DPR and LPR.

On September 30, President Vladimir Putin agreed to sign documents allowing the accession of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, to the Russian Federation.

According to Moscow, the move followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.

Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
