Description

Dozens of Moldovan farmers took their tractors into the streets of Chisinau as part of a demonstration demanding increased financial support from the agricultural sector.

Footage captured on Tuesday shows tractors lined up outside the Government House with Moldovan flags and banners.

At the time of publication, there was no official information about detentions provided by the country's Interior Ministry.

According to the Moldovan president's official website, Maia Sandu said on Monday that the state should support farmers during this difficult period and noted the importance of a 1.9 billion lei (107530500 US dollars) subsidy this year, which will help farmers produce high value-added products, bring profits to businesses.

In late November, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry announced the launch of a commission to identify farmers' insolvency, which will draw up a list of economic entities on the verge of bankruptcy and develop targeted measures for them.

In addition, Agriculture and Food Minister Vladimir Bolia said that the proposal to reallocate 500 million lei (about 282975 US dollars) from the AIPA fund for 2024 is not supported by the Moldovan government and is seen as a discriminatory measure against other farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs in the republic.

According to media reports, the protesters demand that the government increase support for the agricultural sector affected by drought and falling grain prices, as well as cancel fines for debts. The protesters are also dissatisfied with the opening of the country's market for grain imports from Ukraine.

Protests of Moldovan farmers have been taking place since the summer of 2023. On June 8, Moldovan farmers blocked national roads and some border points, and on 20 June they protested in front of the government building. On June 22, road traffic in the centre of Chisinau was also disrupted by columns of tractors.
