Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the West’s idea of 'fighting to victory' with Russia 'senseless and dangerous', speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Saturday.

"The current Anglo-Saxon strategists do not hide their plans. However, so far they expect to defeat Russia at the hands of the illegitimate neo-Nazi regime in Kiev, but they are already preparing Europe to rush into a suicidal adventure. I will not speak here about the senselessness and danger of the very idea of fighting to victory with a nuclear power, which is Russia," Lavrov said.

He went on claiming that the Western countries "don’t hesitate to appeal to the UN Charter, demanding that Ukraine's territorial integrity be ensured," but forget about other UN fundamentals such as the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples.

"These flagrant violations of the rights of Russians enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, along with the threats to the security of Russia and the whole of Europe that emanate from the Kiev regime and those who are dragging it into NATO, are the root causes of the current Ukrainian crisis," Lavrov added.

"The special military operation that Russia is conducting to protect its security and the present and future of the people in their ancestral land is aimed at eliminating them," the minister concluded.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
