Russian State Duma Chairperson Vyacheslav Volodin said that Nicaragua is a key partner for Moscow in Latin America, speaking at a meeting with the Republic’s President Daniel Ortega in Managua on Saturday.

"Nicaragua is an important partner for us in Latin America. We will develop our relations on the basis of the principles laid down by you and our President, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. We will try to do our best to contribute to the interests of our states and citizens, so that the issues we are discussing can be resolved and, of course, the result can be achieved," Volodin said.

According to the State Duma’s press service, the sides discussed the development of interparliamentary relations between Moscow and Managua.

A delegation of Russian deputies arrived in Nicaragua on Thursday. Volodin also attended an event marking the 45th anniversary of the Nicaraguan Revolution, and conveyed congratulations of the Russian President to the people of Nicaragua on the occasion.

The Nicaraguan Revolution ended on 19 July 1979 with the victory of the Sandinista National Liberation Front. The uprising led to the overthrow of President Anastasio Somoza. The occasion is celebrated annually as a public holiday in Nicaragua.
