Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed the future of the world 'cannot be invented in a test tube, involving the UN secretariat and Western lobbyists,' while discussing the UN's 'Pact of the Future' at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in New York on Wednesday.

"The future of our peoples cannot be invented in a test tube, involving the UN secretariat and Western lobbyists. It is important to shape the decision on the matter via negotiations, seeking a balance of interests. Let me remind you that there was not a single round of negotiations with all delegations while elaborating on the 'Pact for the Future'. This is unprecedented," Lavrov stated.

In addition, Russian Foreign Minister said the World Trade Organisation (WTO) needed to become 'fully operational' again, claiming it had been sidelined by the US and the Ukraine conflict.

"All the attention and resources of international institutions and the West are absorbed by Ukraine. It is necessary to reconstruct the World Trade Organisation and to make it fully operational again in a short time. Its activity is now interrupted by the US’s destructive course, preventing the WTO from resuming work on dispute settlement; the institution has been dormant for years," said Lavrov.

Lavrov's speech in the G20 meeting room was attended by U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

On Sunday, the UN adopted its 'Pact for the Future'; 56 commitments in science, international security, youth rights, sustainable international development and the transformation of global governance. 143 states supported it, 15 abstained, seven countries, including Russia, were against.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, together with Belarus and Nicaragua, requested an amendment to the document on the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states, although it was rejected.

"If the proposed amendment is not included in the text of the Pact, Russia will distance itself from the consensus on this document and on the Global Digital Compact, especially with regard to the provisions on disarmament, as well as on the participation of non-governmental organisations in the work of the United Nations and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights," Vershinin said.

Lavrov arrived in New York to participate in the UN General Assembly events on Wednesday. The minister is also scheduled to participate in several bilateral and multilateral meetings, including events within the CSTO, BRICS, G20 and the Group of Friends for the Defense of the Charter of the UN.
