Comrat residents held a celebratory rally in support of Yevgenia Gutsul on Monday, as the Court of Appeal approved the Moldovan opposition Shor party candidate’s election victory, confirming her as head of Gagauzia autonomous territorial region.
Footage shows Gutsul in the courtroom after she was recognised as the new 'bashkan' (head) of Gagauzia, as well as locals gathering in front of the court building to welcome her win.
"I heard you, this is incredible support," Gutsul told them.
The court made the decision after examining the report of the Central Election Commission on the results of voting held on May 14.
According to the Commission, 27,374 people or 52.34 percent of voters backed Gutsul in the second round. Her opponent Grigore Uzun, an independent candidate supported by the Moldovan Socialist Party, received 24,926 votes or 47.66 percent.
The first round of elections took place on April 30, with eight candidates participating. On May 13, Moldovan President Maia Sandu claimed that the initial vote had been held with numerous violations.
