Former Austrian Foreign Minister and Head of the G.O.R.K.I. Centre, Karin Kneissl, claimed that she was worried about allegedly 'disappearing of law and disappearing of freedom' in the European Union, while speaking on the sidelines of the World Youth Festival 2024 in the Sirius Federal Territory on Sunday.
"There are two things I'm mostly worried about when it comes to the European Union. The disappearing of law and the disappearing of freedom. I always say you can overcome an economic crisis, you can overcome an energy crisis. But once you have lost, let’s call it your soul, which is law and freedom - this cannot be repaired like that," Kneissl said.
The former diplomat went on to claim that the political tool of sanctions hurt those imposing them more than the nations that had been supposed to penalised.
"In the absence of real diplomacy, genuine diplomacy, we have seen many states taking recourse to sanctions which prove more harm to them than those penalties, those punishments against those they wanted to target," Kneissl said.
The World Youth Festival takes place from 1-7 March 2024, to develop international youth cooperation and to bring together 20,000 young people. The regional programme will take place from 10-17 March 2024, during which the participants will visit 30 Russian cities.
The Sirius 'Innovation Science and Technology Centre' is the first federal territory in Russia located on the Black Sea coast near the city of Sochi.
