The Russian badminton and gymnastics teams arrived to participate in the BRICS 2024 Summer Universiade Games in Kazan on Tuesday.

Footage shows the competition mascot Bricsik and performers in Tatar national costumes welcoming the athletes at the Universiade Village. The video also showcases themed venues and entertainment zones.

Angelina Melnikova, an Olympic champion and member of the Russian gymnastics team, expressed her excitement about visiting Kazan and is eager to enter the arena.

"We received a wonderful welcome with dancing and my mood is great. I'm really looking forward to going to the arena," the gymnast added. "There is always an insatiable appetite for sports, as competitions are akin to a grand celebration for me."

"I yearn to witness foreign athletes and engage in competition with them, as we have been limited to internal competitions lately. Now, we will have the chance to meet gymnasts from other countries and partake in a truly global sporting experience," she continued.

Pavel, the head of the Russian badminton team, described the 'warm hospitality' with music and dancing as a mood booster for the athletes after a long journey.

"As we waited for accreditation, we made the most of our time on the bus, soaking up the positive atmosphere. Today, we will regroup, focus, train, and prepare to win the competition in two days," he added.

Maria, a member of the Russian badminton team, expressed the team's determination to 'showcase beautiful badminton' and strive for gold medals.

Nikolai, a local in the area, expressed that the BRICS Games provide a way to address the controversy surrounding Russian athletes not being allowed to compete under the Russian flag at international competitions due to what he referred to as 'far-fetched pretexts'.

The BRICS Games are an annual sports competition between member states of the association. This year's event will be held in Kazan from June 12 to 23 and will bring together around 5,000 participants from 97 countries around the world.
