Participants and spectators of the BRICS Games 2024 shared their hopes and thoughts ahead of the sports competitions as they flocked to Kazan for the opening ceremony on Wednesday.

Footage features a group of performers in traditional Tatar dresses greeting event guests with pastry treats - сhak-chak and karavai - at the venue.

"As you can hear, our state ensemble warmly welcomes guests with such beautiful songs. The Republic of Tatarstan is a very hospitable republic, we show our national culture with warmth at once," said Lyalya Mubarakshina, head of ensemble troupe.

Russian actor Matvei Zubalevich said he was waiting for the BRICS Games opening ceremony with 'great anticipation'.

"I'm sure it will be tremendous. At least, everything I see now already amazes me. The immensity is astounding," he added.

Meanwhile, Beatriz Silva, a two-time Pan American Games Wushu champion from Brazil, shared that she liked the venue: "It's my first time here too. And it’s been lovely to be here. The BRICS Games is beautiful."

Olympic diving champion Ilya Zakharov said that the atmosphere of the event reminded him of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

"The charge of energy is so crazy that the only thing you need to do now is to channel it and show results. I talk to athletes, you can see from all of them that they really lacked it, especially Russian athletes. That's why I am very happy for them and proud of my country. We managed to make again incredibly cool international-class competitions," he noted.

The BRICS Games are an annual sports competition between member states of the association. This year's event will be held in Kazan from June 12 to 23 and will bring together around 5,000 participants from 97 countries around the world.
