Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that while BRICS members like China and Brazil were spearheading Ukraine peace efforts, NATO countries were actively providing military support to Kiev to escalate the fighting, during a press conference following the BRICS Summit in Kazan on Thursday.

"Everyone is determined to end the conflict as quickly as possible and preferably by peaceful means. You know that the People's Republic of China and Brazil took the initiative during the assembly in New York, at the General Assembly in New York," Putin said. "Western countries have begun to actively arm the Kiev regime. What has it come to? To the direct participation of military personnel of the army of NATO countries in this conflict."

The leader also responded to a question about Donald Trump's claim that he had 'threatened' Putin with a strike on Moscow if Russia took action in Ukraine.

"It is pointless to threaten Russia, because it only energises us. But I do not recall such a conversation with Mr. [Donald] Trump. The election campaign in the United States is currently in a very acute phase. And I suggest not to take such statements seriously. But what Mr. Trump said quite recently, and what I heard him say about the desire to do everything to end the conflict in Ukraine, it seems to me that he says this sincerely, and statements of this kind, from whomever they come, we, of course, welcome," Putin stated.

Putin also added that the future of US-Russian relations will depend on the policies of the next US administration. The US presidential elections take place on November 5.

The 16th BRICS Summit took place on October 22-24. World leaders from more than 20 countries, with delegations from over 30 nations, attended one of the major economic, political and cultural events of the decade. At the end of the BRICS leaders' meeting on Wednesday, they signed the Kazan Declaration on future co-operation while Thursday's BRICS Plus/Outreach session included partner countries and organisations.

Russia has chaired BRICS since January 1, 2024. The group expanded this year, taking on new members to grow in both size and influence, now covering nearly half the world's population and a third of the global economy.
