Memorial events marking Victory Day and Immortal Regiment marches dedicated to the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II were seen in cities across Israel, Turkey, India, Cyprus and Cuba on Thursday.

Footage shows flowers being laid at the 'Wings of Victory' monument in Netanya and the monument to the Soviet Internationalist Soldier in Havana, as well as the Immortal Regiment processions in Antalya and Trivandrum, and the 'St George Ribbon' in Limassol.

"Today is a great holiday. We honour this day, this Victory Day. We pass on to our children the memory of this day. We think it's important. The memory must live forever. We live thanks to the feats of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers," said one participant in Netanya.

The Russian Consul General in Antalya, Sergei Vetrik, said that 'about a thousand people took part in' the May 9 events in Antalya and Alanya.

"Today’s holiday is being held in a garden with the symbolic name - the Garden of Religions - where Orthodox and Islamic prayers for the fallen heroes have been held simultaneously, a procession of the Immortal Regiment has been organised, a large photo exhibition, a film screening of war films, and wartime songs and music are being played," he added.

The Immortal Regiment March is an annual tradition that takes place on Victory Day in many countries worldwide. It honours the memory of those who served in the Red Army by carrying portraits of soldiers and laying flowers at memorials.

Victory Day commemorates Nazi Germany's surrender at the end of World War II, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War. Russia and Eastern countries traditionally mark the day on May 9, while in Europe it is May 8, due to the time difference in the signing of the capitulation.
