Moscow residents and tourists continue to celebrate the New Year despite a severe cold snap.

Footage captured on Thursday shows locals walking around the city centre, taking pictures and buying souvenirs.

On Wednesday, forecasters at the Russian Hydrometeorological Centre extended the orange weather alert in Moscow until January 6 due to the unusually cold weather.

On Wednesday night, the capital's main VDNKh weather station recorded an air temperature of minus 27 degrees Celsius.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported via Telegram that almost half a million people rang in the New Year at central locations in each of the capital's districts, in city parks and the 'Journey to Christmas' festival.

New Year holidays in Russia will last until January 8.
