Description

Divers from the Kazan State Medical University Bentos club were seen setting up their traditional underwater Christmas tree, at Lake Izumrudnoye on Sunday, December 24.

Footage shows the team lowering the tree into position, three metres below the ice.

"Today is a special day for all Kazan divers who have been diving in our lakes for a long time," explained Mikhail Romashov. "This is the installation of the 45th tree for the New Year - almost an anniversary. This year we are installing it at the quarry."

According to Romashov, more than 10 people signed up to take part, with the divers working in groups of three at a time for safety reasons.

"You need to immerse yourself in this space, to feel the zero gravity, and then float in zero gravity around the Christmas tree, to feel this sensation - the sensation is impossible to convey," he added.

In previous years, the tree has been installed at the bottom of the Goluboe Lake. The fir is removed following each annual event to keep the water clean.
