Description

The Toidze family from Ozurgeti creates chichilaki - traditional Georgian New Year decorations made from walnut trees with a lush crown of wood shavings.

Footage taken on December 24 shows a town decorated with traditional chichilaki trees. The video also captures people buying a 'Georgian New Year tree' at the market.

Ketino Toidze and her daughter Tatia continue the tradition inherited from Ketino’s father making chichilaki and selling them.

"My father made [chichilaki], he learnt this craft from his father. Me and my children have carried on the tradition and now we make them too," said Ketino.

She added the time it takes to make one New Year tree depends on the size of the tree.

"Chichilakas are made from a walnut tree. First you have to peel the walnut tree, then use a special knife [to make] the curls. <...> It takes an hour and a half to make a large chichilaki, and 15-20 minutes or half an hour for small ones," the craftswoman explained.

The Toidze family is well known in Georgia and beyond. Ketino says she has regular customers from Russia, France and the UK.
