٠٠:٠٣:٠١Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called US media outlets reports of Russian troops amassing at the Ukrainian border a "fake news campaign" during her weekly briefing in Moscow, on Wednesday.
"We took notice of the informational 'salvo' that was fired at us, at truth mostly, which occurred in American media articles regarding the fact that Russia was allegedly amassing troops at the border with Ukraine. This wasn't one fake news item, this is an entire fresh fake news campaign in American media outlets," she said.
According to the spokesperson, the photographs of tanks near the Ukrainian border were satellite pictures taken near the town of Yelnya, which is hundreds of kilometres away from Ukraine.
"American journalists published falsehoods with pleasure, providing it with photographs and video which questions whether they had any critical thinking, while they just picked footage at random from TikTok accounts. Moreover, they refer to Voronezh bloggers. Nobody contacted us," Zakharova added.
Zakharova also said the situation in Afghanistan has not changed since the Taliban took over the country and noted Moscow considers US attempts to place its military infrastructure in Afghanistan's neighbouring countries unacceptable and sees in this "serious risks for regional stability."
Earlier the US-based Politico magazine published an article with commercial satellite images showing military hardware and ground troops allegedly amassing near the town of Yelnya in the Smolensk Region. According to the media, the deployment shows "a clear deviation from this unit's standard training pattern." The article added such movements were taking place amid rising tensions between Moscow and the West.
On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the reports 'cheap fake news' stressing that the movement of Russian military equipment and troops inside the country is solely Moscow's internal affair.
