01:40The World Athletics council, formerly known as the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), suspended the reinstatement process of the Russian Athletic Federation (RUSAF) in Monaco on Friday, after athletics officials were suspended for violating anti-doping regulations.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) met on Friday to discuss the ban on RUSAF, which has been suspended since 2015 over a doping scandal involving several officials and a number of Russian athletes.
“The council mandates the task force to make recommendations to counsel as to the sanctions that the council should impose on RUSAF if it is determined that RUSAF has bridged its obligations under the anti-doping rules. And whether congress should be asked to consider the expulsion of RUSAF from membership of World Athletics,” Andersen said.
Andersen also called into question the future of certain Russian athletes to compete as neutrals, saying that the AIU and the doping review board will "review the authorised neutral athletes ANA mechanism that the council put in place in June 2016, and to make recommendations to counsel as to whether that mechanism can and should continue to be used given the above developments."
The decision comes ahead of an expected decision by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on the status of Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA next month.
