Dozens of protesters gathered in New York City's iconic Times Square on Saturday to decry the attack on Washington DC's Capitol on Wednesday and demand the impeachment of outgoing US President Donald Trump.

The protesters were seen holding anti-Trump signs with speakers addressing crowds.

"Donald Trump needs to go and he needs to go right now. What we saw on Wednesday at the Capitol is payment for the price of the passivity of the American people in the face of Charlottesville, in the face of children being locked in cages at the border," said one of the protesters, Emma Kaplan.

American political activist and BLM leader Hawk Newsome also spoke at the protest. "What you need to do is stay alert, stay vigilant and keep fighting," he stressed.

The Wednesday US Capitol attack was condemned by politicians on both sides of the aisle as well as by leaders from around the world. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris denounced the 'mobbing' of the Capitol, in which five people died and dozens were arrested.
