US President Joe Biden outlined the latest tranche of military aid for Kiev, including 'five new strategic air defence systems', at the opening on the NATO Summit in Washington DC on Tuesday.

"[Russia wants] nothing less than Ukraine's total subjugation, to end Ukraine's democracy, to destroy Ukraine's culture, and to wipe Ukraine off the map," he alleged. "And we know Putin won't stop at Ukraine, but make no mistake. Ukraine can and will stop Putin."

"Today, I'm announcing the historic donation of air defence equipment for Ukraine. The United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Italy will provide Ukraine with the equipment for five additional strategic air defence systems," he added, saying that Kiev would also have dozens more defence systems and be at the 'front of the line' for US 'air defence interceptors'.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told the audience that supporting Kiev was 'not straightforward'.

"The reality is, there are no cost-free options with an aggressive Russia as a neighbour. There are no risk-free options in a war. And remember, the biggest cost and the greatest risk will be if Russia wins in Ukraine," he said.

Biden is also seen awarding the outgoing NATO chief with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honour.

"I realise, I spoke to your wife, I personally asked you to extend your service. Ha, ha! Forgive me?" he said to Stoltenberg.

The 75th NATO Summit in DC began on Tuesday and continues until July 11. According to media reports, Kiev is expected to be told it is 'too corrupt' to join the alliance at the current time, while there is also set to be opposition to Stoltenberg's plan for a 'multi-year' military funding package for Ukraine - widely seen as a way to negate the impact of a potential Trump presidency.

Ukraine has repeatedly called for additional military funding while Russia has accused NATO of escalating the conflict - and has also blamed alliance expansionism for triggering the crisis, which NATO and Kiev have denied.
