Description

The Gaza Civil Defence says that at least 40 people were killed and 60 were injured in an Israel Defence Force (IDF) airstrike on the al-Mawasi refugee camp in Gaza’s Khan Younis overnight Monday.

The al-Mawasi area has been designated a safe zone for refugees, with the IDF claiming it had targeted ‘significant terrorists’ that had been operating a Hama ‘command and control centre’, which the group denies.

Footage shows refugee tents engulfed in smoke as rescuers search for bodies in and around large blast craters. Ambulances can also be seen transporting the wounded to Nasser Medical Hospital.

Camp resident Rami Nayef explained he was sleeping when the strike occurred. “All I could see was smoke, a haze that made it impossible to see someone standing right in front of you. There was no warning or anything, suddenly it hit like that. In seconds, we started running,” he explained.

Gaza’s Civil Defence also announced that twenty to forty of the more than two-hundred tents in the area were destroyed in the attack.

The IDF reported in a statement that its air force had "struck significant Hamas terrorists who were operating within a command and control center embedded inside the Humanitarian Area in Khan Younis," claiming that "the terrorists advanced and carried out terror attacks."

Hamas condemned the strike in a statement, declaring that "Israeli fascist occupation army allegations that gunmen existed in the targeted area is a clear lie that aims to justify these appalling crimes."

Hamas-Israel war broke out after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 and held in Gaza Strip.

In the enclave, Israel military conducted a large-scale campaign of air strikes and ground incursions, killing at least 40,988 Palestinians and injuring more than 94,825 injured at the time of publication.
