Dramatic footage showing the moment suspected Trump shooter Ryan Wesley Routh was apprehended in Florida was released by Martin County Sheriff's Office on Monday.

An officer is heard telling Routh to take two steps to his right and to walk 'straight back'. The suspect is seen moving back with his hands above his head, before being handcuffed.

The 58-year-old was charged with two firearms offences on Monday.

He remain the key suspect in the apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump at the former president's golf course in Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday.

According to media reports, court records show that more than 100 criminal counts have been filed against Routh in North Carolina. The suspect has previously spoken of his support for Ukraine, attempts to go to fight, and recruit others, although a motive for the shooting is not known at time of publication.

The alleged attacker was believed to be around 400-600 yards from Trump when he was seen by the Secret Service and fled leaving behind an AK-47, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera.

Trump responded to the incident in a statement released by his campaign: “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I am safe and well! Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender! I will always love you for supporting me."

The former US president also thanked the Secret Service and local sheriff for keeping him safe. It comes just nine weeks after he was targeted at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, escaping with minor injuries.
