Description

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Brussels on Sunday to call for a ceasefire in Lebanon and Palestine and push for an international military embargo against Israel.

"We are calling for military action against Israel," a protester explained. "If we don't react, Israel will continue what it's doing. Israel must not go unpunished."

Footage shows large crowds marching through the city, waving flags and holding banners reading: 'Please keep the world clean,' 'Stop arming Israel,' '2024, the new holocaust' among others.

"My people in Colombia experienced genocide, also supported by Israel, with Israeli advisors teaching death squads to assassinate trade unionists and workers [...] We have suffered similar displacement of indigenous people due to Israel's terror in Latin America," a protester added.

The Brussels protest was reportedly organised by civil society groups, which aimed to press the Belgian government to follow the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) advisory opinion.

The ICJ has recently declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory, encompassing the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, as unlawful under international law and called to halt trade that facilitates their actions in the region.

Fighting escalated after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that the Palestinian death toll hit 42,600 with more than 99,795 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.

Earlier, the IDF also announced the start of a campaign of airstrikes on Hezbollah positions dubbed 'Operation Northern Arrows'. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that these attacks have resulted in 2,448 casualties and left 11,500 injured.

Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions have been exchanging intensified cross-border shelling with the Israeli forces since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
