Vice President Kamala Harris slammed former President Donald Trump while speaking at her campaign headquarters in Wilmington on Sunday after she announced her intent to run for president following US President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race.

"Before I was elected as United States senator, I was the elected attorney general as I've mentioned to California and before that, I was a courtroom prosecutor. In those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds. Predators who abuse women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain," Harris said

"So, hear me when I say I know Donald Trump's type," she continued. "In this campaign, I will proudly - I will proudly put my record against his."

During her speech, the vice president also promised that the Democratic party would win with her as a candidate. She also vowed to build up the middle class during her presidency.

"Over the next 106 days, we are going to take our case to the American people and we are going to win. We are going to win," she said.

Harris's address comes hours after the US leader announced that he would not be seeking re-election via X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

"While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," he posted.

Following Biden’s statement, Vice President Kamala Harris announced her intention to become the candidate of the Democratic Party.

"Just right after Joe made his announcement, it was important for me to continue with his role of leadership in this office," Harris stated. "Thank you all so very much for what you are doing and what you will continue to do. I know it's been a roller coaster and we're all filled with so many mixed emotions about this," the vice president said.

"I just have to say; I love Joe Biden. I love Joe Biden. And I know we all do and we have so many darn good reasons for loving Joe Biden. And I have full faith that this team is the team that is the reason we will win in November. [...] One team one fight," she added.

This comes as Biden's cognitive abilities have seen huge media scrutiny, which intensified following a much-criticised debate performance with Donald Trump and led to a number of Democratic representatives publicly calling on him to step aside.

The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5. On July 15, the Republican Party convention nominated former White House Head of State Donald Trump.
