United Nations officials urged the world not to forget the crisis in Syria as the Arab country struggles to gain its footing amid years of conflict and ongoing humanitarian crisis.

"My message today is simple: focus on Syria," said Geir Pedersen, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria, as he addressed a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East via video conference in New York City, on Tuesday.

Pedersen noted that Syria 'is still among the greatest humanitarian crises of our era,' adding that 'Syria's absence from the headlines should not mislead anyone into thinking that the conflict needs less attention or fewer resources, or that a political solution is not urgent.'

Although no official figures have been given, estimates by various human rights groups put the number of victims of the Syrian conflict from 500,000 to 600,000 as of March 2022.
