New York Police Department (NYPD) has increased patrols and boosted security near synagogues, as Jewish people in New York City are celebrating the High Holiday of Rosh Hashana.

Footage captured on Wednesday evening shows NYPD vehicles parked outside synagogues, with officers guarding and patrolling neighbourhoods as locals gather to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

"There was a period of time and it's written about in America where Jews felt a little more comfortable and maybe complacent is the word," said a local "But any person who still identifies as Jewish is feeling this heightened concern now. Anger, frustration, fear," she continued.

"I think the Palestinians are far more unprotected in the Middle East and elsewhere than the Jews are in New York," said a pro-Palestine local "How many Palestinians have been killed since October 7? Sixty thousand? How many Jews have been killed in New York since October 7? Zero?"

Tight security measures have been implemented in areas with large Jewish populations ahead of the upcoming anniversary of the October 7 attacks in Israel and amid the ongoing escalation of the war in Middle East.

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the Gaza Strip, Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 41,638 people had been killed and more than 96,460 injured at the time of publication.
