Description

A local resident in Brazil's Vinhedo captured the moment that a commercial airliner fell out of the sky and crashed into a residential area in Sao Paulo state on Friday.

Footage shows the stricken aircraft spiralling out of control toward the ground, before crashing beyond a tree line. A thick plume of black smoke can be seen rising from the site of the accident.

The ATR-72 aircraft, designated flight number 2283 and operated by Voespass Linhas Aereas, had been travelling from Cascavel (Parana state) to Guarulhos (Sao Paulo state). Flight tracking data indicates that flight number 2283 lost 17,000 feet in a minute.

Brazil's military police confirmed to local media at the scene there were no survivors onboard, and that the blaze had been contained by firefighters. No casualties had been reported on the ground at the time of publication. Airline Voepass Linhas Aereas confirmed that its aircraft had crashed, as well as the number of passengers and crew on board, before later reporting that one fewer passenger had been on board than originally announced.

The accident was reported minutes later to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who was speaking at the launching ceremony of a Brazilian Navy frigate in Itajai state. President Lula announced the news of the crash and requested a minute of silence in memory of the victims.

The authorities have reportedly launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and reported that the aircraft's 'black box' flight recorder was discovered intact.

The ATR-72 is a twin-engine turboprop, short-haul regional airliner developed and produced in France and Italy, which carries 72 passengers in a typical seating capacity. It was introduced into service in October 1989. The ATR 72 has been involved in 13 fatal accidents in which a reported 531 people perished.
